Tom Hodge's Last Minute Turangi Fly Box Fillers

So on Win-Stuff Wednesday we got the low down from the man himself, the Mayor of Turangi, Andrew Burden on flies YOU should be packing this big weekend for the Tongariro. Not long afterwards we got a text from Tom Hodge of Canterbury's Epic NZ Adventures who has been spending the week chasing the trout of the Tongariro, and we couldn't help but talk fishing so here's a couple of additions from Tom to make sure you are well stocked up this weekend.

CD: Yo Tom, hows the Tonga been treating you? What's been catching this week?

TH: GLO BUGS!

Simons Ugly and an Otters Soft Egg underneath has been deadly this week!

If the river is gin clear I like using caddis and mayfly patterns however it's been bucketing down rain and the river is coming off full flood.

CD: So what will you be using when it drops?

TH: Mostly gold beadhead Flashback Pheasant Tails

Also little Death Metal Hares Ear in #14. When the river is crystal I use split shot or Loon's Deep Soft Weight as weight to get down as sometimes a massive bomb is too much, however when the river is murky I love those Manic Green Epoxy bombs.

I like my eggs straight orange with a red dot otherwise peachy colours / early girl. I don't tend to fish any other coloured eggs flies really.

Today in the brown water chartreuse stood out really well though whereas the other colours not so much.

Add a big Loon Tip Topper treated with Aquel and let her rip!

Pop in to see the lads at Sporting Life Turangi this weekend for your last minute top ups, say hi to the crew, and we look forward to seeing you at the Winter Fly Fest!
