Team Tuesday - Brisbane Tuna and Flathead on Fly Recap
I recently got the chance to have a chat with Jake Payne from the Brisbane Fly Fishing Club about last weekends huge event, The Brisbane Tuna and Flathead on Fly.
"April 2019 opened the first annual Brisbane Tuna and Flathead on Fly competition an event that was previously the "Brisbane Tuna on Fly competition". This year we made the decision to open it up to Flathead to get more kids and non-boaties involved and to combat the unfishable weather previous years have brought us. Like tradition Tuna fishing was hampered on the Saturday with swell and wind challenging all but the most hardy (crazy?) of the teams. Fish were hard to spot, chase and consequently very few shots to schools were made.
Flathead fishing was more productive, though still challenging with fish being hard to find. A total of 8 flathead were landed. Most fish being caught around creek mouths and weedy edges. A break in the weather on Sunday help all with a boat to go out and chase Tuna with Robert Y. and Martin H. getting a few bust offs on good schools on fish only managing to land a solitary Mac Tuna (and a Bonito).
The most meritorious miss of the weekend unfortunately goes to myself. I managed to hook only a single fish and then whilst trying to work out how to land it, dropped it, only to have the fish drive the hook into my toe - and then swim away with the metaphorical middle finger raised. A HUGE thank you to our sponsors this past weekend.
Trophies were won by: Geoff Orchard - Champion Anger (Combined length 75cm) Kobi Orchard - Team captain of Orange Justice - Champion Team Martin H - Biggest Tuna (~70cm) Colin Burk - Biggest flathead _55cm)
Bring on 2020!"
