Simms ProDry Bib – Reviewed by Jeremy Burke | Ballinger’s Hunting & Fishing NZ

When I first laid eyes on the Simms ProDry Bib, I’ll admit it reminded me of a pair of lightweight waders, just without the boots. But as soon as I picked it up, I could tell this was something different. It didn’t have that heavy, rigid feel you often get with technical rainwear. Instead, it felt like a quality piece of high-performance clothing – light and flexible. I was even more impressed when I put them on. Honestly, I could barely tell I was wearing them. For me, comfort is king when you’re on the water all day.

One of the standout features of the ProDry Bib is how easy they are to get on and off, even when you’re already wearing your boots. That might sound like a small thing, but anyone who’s wrestled with waders or rain gear in a cramped boat knows what a luxury that is. Being able to swap footwear mid-day or quickly throw the bib on over your gear without fuss, is a game-changer.

Functionally, the ProDry Bib is built for anglers. The thigh pocket is a feature I didn’t know I needed until I used it. I keep my pliers in there for quick access when I’m unhooking fish boat side or just having on hand for quick cut offs for safety reasons. It’s simple, but incredibly practical.

In terms of waterproofing and breathability, they’re absolutely fantastic. Simms has clearly nailed the fabric technology. I’ve been out in wind, spray, and serious downpours, and stayed completely dry underneath. But just as importantly, I don’t overheat in them, even on warmer days. The breathability is impressive, and it means I’m not constantly peeling them off between spots or sweating through my clothes.

In the past I have predominately worn the ProDry Bib on the boat while chasing bigger offshore species like kingfish and hapuka. More recently though I have found them just as essential for inshore fishing and would definitely regret it if I left the boat ramp without them. While the obvious benefit is staying dry from rain and spray, one of the underrated advantages is how they protect your clothing from all the mess that comes with fishing - fish slime, bait, blood, the works. At the end of the day, a quick rinse with the hose and the bib is clean (although I do recommend giving it a proper wash every now and then), with everything I wore underneath still dry and spotless. Even better, it doesn’t seem to hold that fishy smell like some technical garments do.

I often compare outdoor gear to a good pair of boots—you shouldn’t even notice you’re wearing them. If you’re thinking about them, they’re probably not doing their job. The Simms ProDry Bib absolutely ticks that box. Once I’m wearing it, I forget it’s even there. It moves with me, keeps me protected, and doesn’t get in the way.

For serious anglers who want a super durable, high-performance waterproof and windproof barrier that doesn’t compromise on comfort or function, the Simms ProDry Bib is a no-brainer. I can’t recommend it enough.
