Techy Thursday - Avoiding Tip Wrap

Fly Rod Tip Wrap

The most frustrating thing following a failed shot at a fish is to wind back your line only to have it wrap and wrap and eventually tangle around your rod tip. Or worse, not notice this until you have another fish in front of you and you are stuck in the midst of a three minute tangle, trying to free your fly from the rod.

Sound familiar? Here’s a simple tip.

Relax your rod hand as you wind back that excess line. By death gripping the rod and holding it too tight, the rod tip bounces wildly and as we all know whatever the rod tip does, the line will follow. Relax your hand when retrieving line and let the rod tip absorb all those little bumps and vibrations.

You can now sleep easy.
