Team Tuesday - Queen's Birthday Tongariro Bash

With Queen's Birthday weekend arriving not long after coming out of lockdown it was a no brainer to take the short week off work and head to Turangi. The fresh that came through the week prior put some great fish into the Tongariro. Swinging big browns up at night on either the Scott L2H 1106/4 or Primal Run 4 weight was a real highlight with the Airflo T10 Flo Tip being the perfect weight tip to get down. The Primal Run two hander 4 weight is a great addition to the arsenal with it handling both the rigours of throwing T10 tips and articulated streamers at night whilst wading deep to throwing lighter T7 tips to the far bank during daylight hours.

During the daylight hours a mixture of swinging small streamers on the 4 weight or nymphing using the Primal Raw 7 weight produced the goods on some stunning Rainbows and the odd Brown. With the river being so low and clear naturals were the order of the day with Green Caddis like the Manic Killer Caddis and classic Hare & Copper patterns doing the damage. The size and condition on some of the fish coming through is outstanding and anglers could be in for a hell of a treat over this winter.
