Lachlan Manning | Muddy Creek Fly Fishing

1.  First, tell us a bit about yourself, where you’re from and what made you gravitate towards fly fishing and guiding?

I grew up in Forster NSW then moved around the east coast of Australia while I was in the defence force. I’m now happy settled in Yea, Victoria. The beauty of nature made me gravitate towards fly fishing. The rivers the mountains the bugs and of course the fish.

2.  Can you give us a rundown on your new guiding operation, Muddy Creek Fly Fishing, and the sort of trips you offer?

I’ve just started my own guiding operation Muddy Creek Fly Fishing based in the Goulburn Valley offering rafting, walk wade fishing and tuition. I’ll also be hosting trips to New Zealand and Montana,

3.  We all know how important it is to keep your dries riding high, staying visible and keeping a natural drift/presentation, whether it’s fishing one singly or running one as the indicator fly on a dry dropper setup. What’s your favourite floatant to get the job done?

My favourite floatant is Loon top ride. It’s awesome for a quick dry out and works on everything. When you need to get your fly back on the water quickly top ride is my go-to.

4.  Word on the street is if you’re not on the water, you can be found at The Flyfisher’s new shop in Yea, Victoria. It must be great having a new local to have a yarn and catch up with other fly fishing aficionados

It’s really cool seeing some of the young local guys come through the shop and really get after it. Their passion and enthusiasm rubs off on everyone

5.  Any must have flies for the early season in Victoria?

Must have flies for the season have to be Manics Wicked Wulff and Chubby Chernobyl. These flies float all day, have great visibility and get smoked by the fish!

6.  Last but not least, what are your bucket list destinations or species?

Bucket list species would be a big bull trout on a streamer, or a Yamame in a small Japanese mountain stream.
