Guide Profile – Kiyoshi “Yoshi” Nakagawa from Hunting & Fishing Northshore
WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO?
My name is Kiyoshi Nakagawa. Originally from Japan I have been living in New Zealand for 25 years. I am a professional Fly-Fishing guide, and I also run the Freshwater Fishing department at Hunting and Fishing North Shore.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF FLY FISHING IN NZ?
I love it all, but backcountry sight fishing with a dry/dropper rig is hard to beat.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FLY ROD AND WHY YOU LOVE IT?
Currently I’m loving the Primal Zone 10ft #2 paired with a Lamson Guru E reel. this is a perfectly balanced setup for Euro nymph style fishing, which I do a lot of at this time of year.
ONE TIP FOR ANGLERS COMING TO NZ FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Practice, practice, practice. You can never be too good at casting and accuracy is critical in New Zealand. Also, don’t worry about buying flies for your trip before you come to New Zealand. The best thing you can do, is go into a local retailer and ask them what is working currently. This will change depending on the region and time of year etc.
