Beaks & Geeks - Q+A with Angus Line from Fly Fishing Outfitters

How did the obsession with chasing parrotfish on fly begin?
I would say that my obsession began through fly fishing on the flats of the mid-west of WA. I would constantly see parrots while chasing other species like tuskies and XL parrotfish, their alluring neon colours and awesome tails flapping across the flats is what made me fixate on learning how to capture them on fly.

Words of advice when targeting parrotfish on fly?
Be patient, like extremely patient. These fish are tricky and it takes some serious hours to crack their moody personalities. The first mission I did to specifically target these fish, I spent 5 days chasing them for 8+ hours a day. I almost gave up, but eventually you will figure them out and get the hang of their mannerisms. Also, bring really strong hooks.

What were your initial thoughts when you saw one of those massive tailor cruising the flats for the first time?
I was absolutely blown away. The first one I ever saw, I cast at and hooked. Unfortunately, I lost the fish. It tail-walked away, thrashing and throwing water everywhere. This absolutely hooked me into chasing them.

Essential bits of kit when going on trips in wild, rugged areas?
I always prioritise my UV protective clothing. A bad sunburn can really ruin your trip. Besides UV gear I always double down on my fishing equipment, making sure I have spares of all my essential equipment, like my main rod and reel. There is no point going remote without any backups.

How did the film come about?
The film came about after I was approached by the Manic team to create something for the Rise festival with Kurt Wilson. My first thought was to film something that you couldn't find on the internet, and that was catching surf parrots on film. It was a great opportunity; we had an incredible time putting this film together.
