Salty Saturday - Dave Bradley tours Far North Queensland

AFO regular client and all-round nice guy Marty Sprott made the stop in Brisbane to meet Luke Spear. Luke is the son of retired Florida Keys guiding legend and Spear Boatworks owner Harry Spear. There, they hooked up with Australian Flyfishing Outfitters guide Dave Bradley where they spent a couple of windy days chasing Golden and Giant Trevally. Luke managed to tick both boxes and his trip was off to a flying start.

Dave and Luke then travelled north to continue their road trip of Queensland, stopping into another flat to catch more Goldies on what turned out to be the Golden Trevally expedition to end them all. Landing ten plus in one short day before calling it early to move to the next flat to try for the elusive Queenfish.

Back at Hinchinbrook, Luke ticked a few more species off his list with Barramundi, Diamond Trevally, Queenfish, a big GT and shots at Permit that didn’t quite stick.

A flight to Weipa later, the boys caught up with Alan Philliskirk of Fish’s Fly and Sportfishing. Here they were greeted by lots of Queenfish, Swallowtail Dart and bigger Barramundi. A good look around the place combined with amazing hospitality from Fish and his wife Sue, Luke was reluctantly back on the plane heading home to tell tales of his trip down under.

"Our main weapons for the trip were a Meridian 10wt matched with a Hatch Finatic 9+ and Airflo Flatsmaster. A Meridian 9wt, Lamson Speedster and an Airflo Intermediate and a Meridian 8wt for the Barramundi with an Airflo Clear Tip. With gear like this, we had absolute confidence that Luke would head home with a grin from ear to ear!"
