Manic Mondays - Sunday fun-day in Taupo

Next week Alex (our man in the warehouse) is setting off on a new adventure in Japan. So, yesterday a few of the Manic boys said “farewell” to Alex and “hello” to winter in the most appropriate way - fishing (and a few cold ones).

We set off to Taupo on Saturday evening and drove through some fairly horrendous rain. The next morning - as expected, our fishing options were limited. Both the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo were flowing high and filthy, the Hinemaia became the obvious choice. Running a little fuller and with a bit of colour, we knew there’d be a bunch of fresh run fish we could welcome to the neighbourhood with a friendly hook to the jaw.

Alex hooked up on a very acrobatic rainbow that jumped at least a dozen times – and in typical “man-of-few-words” fashion, Alex simply describes the day as “Brilliant.”

There were plenty of fish caught, many in beautiful silver condition – a true sign of great things to come for the winter runs in Taupo.

Double tungsten Manic flies (Simons Uglies #12, Hooligans#12, Iron Maidens #12 & #14) were the perfect “TRUCK” and Flashtail Globugs, Unreal Egg and Otters Soft eggs were the perfect “TRAILERS”.

Another key component adding to the overall pleasurable experience; was Trout Hunter Fluorocarbon – this stuff is seriously strong! We truly put it to the test fighting hefty fish, in fast water, in a very no-nonsense sort of way.

Over the coming months you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecasts, have your gear packed, ready to go and keep your weekend schedules free. It seems things will certainly heat up after each spell of rain and anglers that make the trip will have an absolute blast.

Taupo’s Mountain View Motel is a great place to stay. Owner Kunio Onishi is a mad keen angler who really knows his stuff – and can fill you in with his local expertise.

Get amongst it!

Alex – having second thoughts about leaving???
