Who We Are
The Lakeside Fly Fishing Club was established in 1951 by a group of keen freshwater fly fishing enthusiasts and is one of the oldest fly fishing Clubs in Sydney. We take great pride in being counted amongst a very select few Clubs that are dedicated solely to the art and science of freshwater fly fishing for trout.
Our Club boasts a loyal and friendly membership that stretches across the greater Sydney metropolitan area. We are affiliated with the New South Wales Council of Fresh Water Anglers (CFA), the Australian Casting Federation (ACF) and Recreational Fishing Alliance.
What We Do
Our Club has a long and proud history. Over the years, we have held both Australian and NSW Casting Championships and assisted in the staging and support of the World Fly Fishing Championships held in Australia in 1988. We actively compete each year in a variety of casting and fishing competitions; including the CFA Inter-club meet, Brunn Shield, Brazier Cup and the NSW Casting Championships.
Our Club is widely regarded as a teaching club, where Anglers come to:
- learn to fly cast;
- learn to tie their own flies;
- learn read a river (stream craft);
- Learn tie the right knots;
- learn the art of “leader” construction;
- share knowledge and last but not least,
- go fishing with other like minded soles on a regular basis.
In its efforts to teach fly fishing, the Club leases from Bankstown City Council a large fresh water pond located within the Mirumbeena Recreation Area at Lansdowne, in Sydney’s South-West. The Club holds monthly casting days, casting schools and competitions at this location throughout the year and is one of the places where our more experienced members pass on their casting knowledge to our beginners.
If you are an experienced fly fisher wanting to share a yarn, or someone wishing to learn and take up the sport, then on behalf of our Club I extend a warm welcome and an invitation to attend one of our regular meetings, where you can hear and see for yourself exactly what the club is all about and what it does. If you decide to join the Club you will then enjoy the full benefits that membership brings; including a monthly newsletter that aims to be interesting and informative and access to the substantial knowledge and expertise the Club holds in fly fishing, fly tying and stream craft.
Membership also entitles you to join us on more than a dozen organised events each year including nine weekend fishing trips, discounted fly casting lessons from professional instructors and invitations from other fly fishing clubs to attend weekends away fly fishing with them in both fresh and salt water. The Club also holds monthly fly tying nights and other activities designed to improve your understanding of fly fishing. Members also frequently team up mid-week and fish the rivers and lakes West of Sydney.
