The Lowdown: We are now well into the winter months here in Central Otago and I enjoy getting out most days on the Clutha River fishing with my Airflo Vibe Switch rod for a few hours at a time, casting heavy sink tips and swinging flies through likely pieces of water. The Vibe upgrade has really set the bar and punches above its price-point in a powerful, light and easy casting combo, handling the junk often needed to score on larger, faster water.
I tend to use unweighted streamers these days when swinging flies, even on the deeper / heavier sections of the Clutha. Due to the heavier grained Skagit lines and fast sinking tips that are required to get your fly down into the "bingo" zone I see little point in weighting the flies, so choose to keep them easy to cast for both myself, and clients.
Pauls tip: A favorite knot that I use to attach my streamers to my tippet is the Non Slip Loop Knot or also known as Lefty Kreh's Loop Knot , this knot allows a very strong fixed loop in the end of the line. Because the loop doesn't grip the eye of your fly , it creates a flexible joint and allows a more natural action to your streamer , making it more life like in the water.
