FISHING REPORT
30-09-2011
FLY AND GUN
Early mornings and change of light are still the best times for fishing out on the great lake this week.
Some very good fish being caught first light.
Best spots have been Waitahanui, 5 Mile Bay, Rotognaia Point and round to the White Cliffs if the weather has permitted.
Still fishing that shallower depth seems to be the key at anything between 40 and 80 feet as the water temperature remains at just over 11 degrees.
Chop and change your depth and lures till you find what works is very much the answer this week
Top lures are Baby Brown, Solid Gold, Traffic Light and Fluoro Orange and the Green Cobra.
Harling has also continued to do well even just along the Lake Front itself this week.
Smaller sized 6# flies doing well with the Green Orbit, Parsons Glory and Ginger Mick doing the damage.
The local fly fishing has been patchy this week as the rivers have become lower and clearer after the rains, the fish are still coming through but in smaller numbers and are running through quite quickly staying on the move to find those fresh fish has been the key to success this week.
Smaller naturals down to size 16# is what you will be needing to use in the clearer conditions.
Top spot will have to be the Tongariro this week as fresh fish continue to pulse up the river on a reasonably regular basis , conditions are challenging but staying on the move and adapting to fishing much finer has been getting some good results with some very good quality fish showing up through the week.

Wind and bad weather has kept the boaties very much at bay this week. Those that have braved the elements and found some shelter have found the fishing a little harder than previous weeks.
The harlers that have got out on the water at first light on days before the wind has got up have had some very good fishing still, but a lot of small fish to contend with.
On the other hand the local fly fishing has had a bit of a mini bonanza with a big Westerly hitting our local rivers coinciding with some good rain over the weekend this gave the Hinemaia, the Waitahanui and the T.T some very good runs of fresh fish, those that were able to get out and take advantage of those conditions were rewarded with some excellent fishing ,Glo Bugs and Bombs were the go on the day with large sized 10# and 12# Eggs and some heavy weight bombs to get down through the heavier flows .
The wetliners had a ball going down the T.T on the Tuesday with some very good quality fish being caught on Black and Olive Woolly Buggers and Cone heads. The Tongariro did not get overly affected by the rain but did get a decent run of fresh fish through, once again the wetliners probably had the best of the fishing early in the mornings.
Forecast for the weekend is for more unsettled weather (not going to say rain !! ) and for a colder South Westerly wind to hit by the weekend so it will be rough but the conditions with the higher river levels should be very good.
Tight Lines till next week

Good fishing still going on out on the lake this week. Harling has been the top method for numbers of fish this week also some better quality fish being caught on the Harl during the week. Reports from quite a few sources commenting on the large amounts of smelt being found in the trout caught over the last few weeks , this has got to be positive news.
Still, very early in the morning is the time to be out there for the best of the fishing. Also the change of light in the afternoon will produce some reasonable fishing.
Top lures to harl with will be the smaller Spotty Gold, Yellow and Green Cobras chasing a small Parsons Glory or Yellow Lady.
Lake front and Golden Mile still as good as any where to try, although those that took advantage of the calmer weather and ventured further afield over to the Western Bays had some excellent fishing with some good quality fish caught.
For the trollers the top lures are still both the large and small Spotty Gold Cobras plus Orange and Gold King Cobras ,Green and Yellow Cobras and the Green and Gold Toby have all been working well this week through the day.
Fishing those shallower depths has been the key this week for the trollers. Anywhere between 40-60 feet deep. Change your lures and depths to find your fish.
Local fly fishing this week is pending on how much rain we get although we did have some steady runs through the system at the beginning of the week as the barometer dropped. Reports from the Tongariro suggest that the early birds that got themselves out of bed were rewarded with some reasonable fishing.
The river mouths have been very busy as fish start to gather at the entrances awaiting the next fresh. Mixed reports on the fishing with odd bursts of activity as fish come through in small shoals. there were some good quality fish being caught but very spasmodic .
Most rivers will have had fresh fish in them during the week and are all well worth trying but we do still really need that next proper fresh.
Lake Rotoaira opens this week Sept 1st well worth a visit this time of year . Also a reminder that the new National Licences are due Oct 1st and are available now .
Tight lines till next week
