TAUPO FISHING REPORT
08-07-11
FLY AND GUN
Steady fishing out there on the lake again this week, lots of small fish still to contend with but still some good fish amongst them . We had reports of one very nice 8lb Hen caught over at the Reef this week whilst jigging for one very happy local.
Top depths still that 20-30 meter mark, top lures , Green and Yellow Cobra, small Black Toby, Spotty Gold and Baby Brown.
Early mornings still the best time of day to be out there, we have got some rough looking Westerlies due to hit the lake at the weekend bringing quite a lot of rain with them, top spots will be the Golden Mile along to Jerusalem Bay, Mine Bay and Whakaipo Bay will also offer some shelter if the weather does as forecast.
Local fly fishing has been very patchy again this week at the time of writing the rains that were forecast still had not arrived so the rivers have been low and clear , the barometer has been steadily dropping this week so if we get the promised rain and with the extra chill in the air then I am hoping we should see some serious winter runs happening .
Once again I would have to say that the Waitahanui is the best performing local river at the moment, not in terms of big numbers but certainly in the size and quality of fish being caught and lost .
Naturals are your best bet at the moment in the clear water with small size 14# Cadillacs, Green Caddis, PTN,s and Hares Ear. If we get enough rain to put a bit of colour in the rivers then you need to get your Glo Bugs out and make sure you have enough weight on your rig to get down to the bottom, if your flies are not on the bottom then you are not going to catch at this time of year, pretty much the Golden Rule of Taupo winter fishing .
A bit more activity reported from the river mouths this week , still quite sporadic but some good quality fish being caught at the local mouths , early mornings are the time to be out for the better fish at the moment.
Hopefully news next week of wintery weather, lots of rain and big runs of very late winter spawners running the rivers till then
