FISHING REPORT
30-09-2011
FLY AND GUN
Early mornings and change of light are still the best times for fishing out on the great lake this week.
Some very good fish being caught first light.
Best spots have been Waitahanui, 5 Mile Bay, Rotognaia Point and round to the White Cliffs if the weather has permitted.
Still fishing that shallower depth seems to be the key at anything between 40 and 80 feet as the water temperature remains at just over 11 degrees.
Chop and change your depth and lures till you find what works is very much the answer this week
Top lures are Baby Brown, Solid Gold, Traffic Light and Fluoro Orange and the Green Cobra.
Harling has also continued to do well even just along the Lake Front itself this week.
Smaller sized 6# flies doing well with the Green Orbit, Parsons Glory and Ginger Mick doing the damage.
The local fly fishing has been patchy this week as the rivers have become lower and clearer after the rains, the fish are still coming through but in smaller numbers and are running through quite quickly staying on the move to find those fresh fish has been the key to success this week.
Smaller naturals down to size 16# is what you will be needing to use in the clearer conditions.
Top spot will have to be the Tongariro this week as fresh fish continue to pulse up the river on a reasonably regular basis , conditions are challenging but staying on the move and adapting to fishing much finer has been getting some good results with some very good quality fish showing up through the week.
Tight Lines till next week
