Taupo Fishing Report - 26th August 2011

Another steady weeks fishing out there on the great lake this week , clear cold and crisp winter weather with clear sunny views over the snow capped mountains , just a stunning place to be out on at this time of year!
Best fishing once again a lot shallower, anywhere from 40-80 feet deep, remember the key is to chop and change fishing depths to stay in touch with the fish.
Small Cobras in Spotty Gold, Baby Brown, Yellow and Green, and Rastafarian, as well as Orange and Gold King Cobra are still doing the damage also the Small Black Toby is worth a try.
Best areas are the local Bays including Acacia Bay, The Lake Front, Whakaipo and Waitahanui, over to Rotagnaia and the Cliffs, Some good reports this week from the Horomatangi Reef , iff the weather stays as calm and clear as it has been recently then basically the world is your oyster out there.
Harling has also been very productive but without doubt the best fishing whether Harling or Trolling is still very early in the morning and then again at the change of light, late afternoon.
Local fly fishing is still very challenging with the continued low and clear conditions , most local rivers will have had small runs of fish go through now that the moon has died down a little but they are running through very fast under the cover of darkness and proving difficult to tempt when found.
One big advantage you can have is being on the water before anyone else , this means getting out of bed and being on the river just before daybreak, you will find some very cold conditions but you should be rewarded with the best fishing of the day.
Top flies to use locally are small, drab and slim looking naturals such as P.T.N’s, Hares Ear and Green and White Caddis in size 14# and 16#, change the leader right down to 5lb or 6lb B/S and keep movements to a minimum , don’t walk straight up the runs , just stand back and watch for a while before going ahead to quickly .
Here’s wishing for Rain.
