Taupo Fishing Report - 25th November 2011
The fishing this last week has been a lot better again out on the lake for those that have braved the winds and rain.
Harling is still the top method for those that are prepared to get out of bed and on the lake nice and early, White Striker charters have been having a blast this last week with the Harling landing a Brown Trout at 8LB and a Rainbow at 5LB plus quite a few good quality fish one morning over at Rangatira Point.
Similar action also for Bravado and White Striker on the downriggers fishing much deeper than normal getting down to anything from 35-45 meters deep. Local anglers Mr Bill Lomaz and Grandson Jack Laugeseen have been having some great fishing out there this week catching a number of good quality Rainbows topped by a Brown Trout of 4 3/4 lb .
Top lures this week Orange and Gold Kiwis, Green and Yellow Cobras and small sized Spotty Gold Cobras, chopping and changing depth is still very much a part of success out there at the moment.
The inclement wintery weather has restricted a lot of fishing to local bays this last week but once the weather settles it will be well worth while getting over to the Western Bays and over the Reef to try some less pressured water .
Local fly fishing has had a windy wintery blast this week with lots of rain so the fishing has been somewhat slower, the odd bit of good fishing has been coming from some of the local river mouths once the wind dies down, Waitahanui in particular has had some reasonable numbers going through.
The Tongaririo continues to have small consistent pods of fish going through especially on these low pressures we have been having.
Backcountry rivers have had mixed reports with the wintery weather holding back a lot of insect activity and the dry fly activity in the evenings has also been very intermittent with a cold wind arriving just at hatch time.
Good news is better weather should be just round the corner, Brown and Green Beetles are on the wing and I heard the first Cicada here in town just yesterday so all to look forward to now as we head towards summer .
