Friday Fly Day - Kelly Lyttle

Its winter, and right now Taupo's the place to be, and who better to give us a run down on her favourite local flies than Kelly Lyttle...

"I use quite a few manic flies from necessity because dad slowly got sick of me losing all of his home ties. I think the more I started to go fishing the emptier his fly box got. I used to tie my own but find it hard to find the time to sit down and do that anymore! Without doubt the best bombs for winter taupo fishing are Simons Ugly range: bland for clear water and bling for coloured water is what I usually stick to. My top nymphs are Manics PTN flash back, Death Metal PTN, Death Metal Hares Ear and PT Czech nymph claret. My go to for high flows are always caddis, Korbays green Czech! Dad's an advocate for not using egg patterns, but if he is getting ahead of me then I may sneak around the corner and chuck the odd otters soft egg on. Shh. Don't tell Dad!"
